@amy The best time to handle a hamster is during the evening when the hamster is wide awake. Never wake him up since that way you will lose trust. Check out this article about hamster taming. The best age for a Syrian hamster to breed is from 4 to 6 months but only if you know to whom you are going to give the baby hamsters since there are so many hamsters up for adoption : (

whenever i try to take out my hamster peanut, he tries to run away (sometimes to eat) and he flinches too i think its because i wake him up but i cant be sure. Will he get used to me? i got him in march of 2010.But he is okay once i take him out? i dont understand. also do you know if its good for a hamster if you breed him (the boy) just before a year old? cause my freind has a girl of the same breed. thanks :) , AMY

@kristen Hamsters will eventually not mind being petted but only for a few minutes... On the whole, the tamest hamsters of all are the Russian Hamsters which love staying in your hands if they trust you eventually when they are tamed and also Syrian Hamsters and Chinese Hamsters will like being held (for short periods of time). Only Robovski Hamsters do not like petting. The first step is to have your hamster trust you and to build trust you will need patience and time. Check out this article about hamster taming.

When hamsters are scared they tend to pee a lot..but it is normal to finds droppings especially if your hamster is a Syrian Hamster.

Will my hamster eventually not mind me petting it in it's cage? I've learned it's a territorial thing but will he ever stop? And do hamsters poo when they are scared? Because my hamster, Dusty, poo's a lot and I don't know if it's just because he has to go or if he is just going because he has to go.

@All time low fan666 If you are bringing a Syrian Hamster then, the best is one hamster since Syrian hamsters are solitary. If you are bringing a Dwarf Hamster, then bring two dwarf hamsters of the same gender. Only dwarf hamsters like company.
